The fact of the matter is, heady glass is expensive. Always. Even if you know the person who made it, usually. So when your local “glass guru” offers you a “heady” for a hundred bucks, you can assume that it is not a true heady piece. In fact, price is not the only way you can tell if a piece is truly heady glass. Just by looking at it, most people will be able to tell. Joints not welded properly, small imperfections in the shape or color. Lack of detail and complexity of design. All of these things are good to look for when scooping a heady from some random person. You may be asking yourself, “Why exactly are heady rigs so expensive?” Excellent question. Let me see if we can better explain the reasons. Painstakingly adding colors and designs and custom aspects for the specific customer depending on if it is a commission piece or part of a certain line of work they make. Think of it this way. A plain white T-shirt that was made at an automated factory as one of a thousand a day is cheap. However, a hand-stitched, intricately designed, colorful, patterned T-shirt would be way more expensive. They are both shirts. They both function as a shirt in that they cover your torso.
